Watercolour abstracts featured in September exhibit of Rotunda Gallery
Drawing on an ancient form of art media, Brampton artist Warren Hoyano introduces the world of abstract watercolour, in his exhibit entitled Tunneling Heart, at the Rotunda Gallery for the month of September.
Pigment suspended in water is a medium dating back to prehistory and the beginnings of art. A precursor of modern watercolour, it was used to paint some of the oldest, most compelling images ever created in the caves of Lascaux, Altamira and other prehistoric sites.
“Despite its demonstrated power, for the longest time and especially in the field of abstract art,” Hoyano contends, “watercolour has taken a backseat to oil and acrylic as a serious medium of expression.”
Tunneling Heart is composed of paintings that fall into two broad categories, Hoyano says. The first is a series of paintings made up of abstract representations of the human torso.
“The scar-like marks that crisscross the figures represent the psychic wounds that we all carry hidden behind our polished exteriors,” says Hoyano, adding the second group of paintings are pure abstracts. “Their meaning and content are up to the viewer to interpret. Both groups rely heavily on texture and the quality of the edges of the shapes and lines for their expressiveness.”
Warren Hoyano was born and raised in Montreal. A self-taught artist, he now lives and works as an abstract watercolour painter in Brampton. Warren is an award-winning artist who has participated in various group and juried shows for the past six years.
Hoyano’s exhibit is funded in part by the Ontario Arts Council, an agency of the Government of Ontario.
